Also called physiogenesis. —physiogenetic, physiogenic, adj. phytobiology plant biology. —phytobiologist, n. —phytobiological, adj. pleomorphism the existence of a plant or animal in two or more distinct forms during a life cycle. The underground vascularised roots bear root hairs at their tips and generally lack chlorophyll. [178] Non-vascular plants, the liverworts, hornworts and mosses do not produce ground-penetrating vascular roots and most of the plant participates in photosynthesis. [179] The sporophyte generation is nonphotosynthetic in liverworts but may be able to contribute part of its energy needs by photosynthesis in mosses and hornworts. [180] The root system and the shoot system are interdependent – the usually nonphotosynthetic root system depends on the shoot system for food, and the usually photosynthetic shoot system depends on water and minerals from the root system. [178] Cells in each system are capable of creating cells of the other and producing adventitious shoots or roots. [181] Stolons and tubers are examples of shoots that can grow roots. [182] Roots that spread out close to the surface, such as those of willows, can produce shoots and ultimately new plants. [183] In the event that one of the systems is lost, the other can often regrow it.

The invention of the microscope in the 16th cent. gave a great stimulus to biology, broadening and deepening its scope and creating the sciences of microbiology, the study of microscopic forms of life, and microscopy, the microscopic study of living cells. Students should attempt to identify and take an appropriate course no later than the term of application to the CSU. The interests of our lab lie in the interaction of sensory systems and behavior, particularly in how internal state influences sensory processing through neurochemical signals such as serotonin.
